Chapter Fifteen

Alpha Strongclaw was sitting behind his desk, looking ten years older than he had the day before when Wynona had first met him. There were dark circles under his eyes and his skin looked paler, giving him the haunted look of the weary.

“Have a seat,” he murmured, waving toward the unoccupied chairs.

Wynona sat in one, with Colby in the other.

Sighing heavily, Alpha Strongclaw leaned back, eyeing the two of them. “While I have questions for you, son, I’m sure Wynona would like an explanation for her husband’s behavior.” He tilted his chin down and raised his eyebrows.

Wynona nodded, though hesitantly. “I’ve never seen him get like that before. I mean…he’s always been protective, but this was more than that. It’s like his wolf had completely taken over.”

Alpha Strongclaw nodded and pinched the bridge of his nose. “We call it ‘becoming’. All alphas go through it as they come into their leadership powers, if you will.” He looked up at Wynona. “Rascal has always had alpha tendencies, so this isn’t a surprise.” He leaned back, his eyes glancing to Colby. “What is a surprise is what brought them out and how strong they are.”

Wynona frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Usually a becoming happens when a wolf is preparing to start leading.” Alpha Strongclaw’s bright golden eyes pinned Wynona in place, looking much stronger than they had only moments before. “Since I have no intention of stepping down, I can only guess that something about your relationship with Rascal or the case started to bring the powers forward.” Alpha Strongclaw grunted. “And the strength of them is usually enough to make a wolf moody, not to completely take away his common sense.”

“Can we stop it?” Wynona asked.

Alpha Strongclaw shook his head. “He’s going to have to go through it. There’s really nothing we can do about it except wait him out. You’ll find there are times when he’s extremely calm, almost too calm, and there will be times when he’s like a teapot ready to explode.” The alpha slowly shook his head. “I wish I could tell you more, but I’ve never seen it happen quite like this, so it’s uncharted territory for all of us.”

Wynona tucked her hair behind her ear. “And just what are these alpha powers he’s developing?”

Alpha Strongclaw clasped his hands on the top of the desk. “The power of his voice, for one,” Alpha Strongclaw explained. “I’m sure you’ve noticed that I have the ability to order those in my pack into a certain level of obedience.”

Wynona nodded.

“Every alpha’s level of obedience varies.” One side of Alpha Strongclaw’s lips lifted up. “I’m guessing Rascal’s will be exceptionally strong.” The smile fell. “Although, without a pack, I’m not sure how well it will work for him.”

“Anything else?” Wynona pressed.

“Calmness in times of trouble. The ability to communicate with his wolves or pack. Extra physical strength and his other senses will be heightened. His vision, smell and hearing will all become more than other wolves’.”

Wynona twisted her fingers together. “I can feel power pulsing through him,” she said softly.
